Fr. Simon Chen Shang-I

Fr. Simon Chen Shang-I was born at Fujian in China mainland on 10 September 1929. A part of his studies he did with the Salvatorians at Macao. He entered the Dominican Order in the United States and was temporarily professed but after having known the Salvatorians in Menominee, he expressed his wish to join the Society. In 1957 he was favourably recommended by the confreres there and started the novitiate at Colfax in Iowa, which he ended professing his first vows on 8 September 1958. After having finished his philosophical and theological studies in the USA, he was ordained a priest there on 2 January 1964. On the recommendation of the Provincial Superior of the USA, he was appointed by the Superior General, Fr. Maurinus Rast, to work in the Salvatorian Mission of Taiwan, where he served as a parish priest at Pinglin in Taipei and in Ylan until he retired in 2009. Fr. Simon was several times the superior of the Salvatorians in Taiwan. The evening of his life he passed in the Salvatorian community. Due to his weak health condition, he was brought to the nursing home of the Camilian Sisters at Luo-Dong in Ylan, where he passed away on 27 December 2020 while he was asleep.
