RIP: 12/10/2024 - Dar es Salaam
Fr. Engelberth Paulo Makungu was born on 2 February 1975 in Sumbawanga, Tanzania. He obtained primary education from 1993 to 1997 at the Don Bosco Minor Seminary Mafinga and Meta Secundary School Mbeya from 2000 to 2002. Feeling called to become a Salvatorian, he went to Namiungo in 2003. One year later, he started his novitiate at Nakapanya Tunduru which he finished by professing his first religious temporary vows in the Society through the Tanzania Mission Pro-Province at 8 December 2005. In order to do his philosophical and theological studies, he was sent to the Salvatorian Institute of Philosophy and Theology, the later Jordan University College, where he was awarded a Bachelor´s degree in both academic disciplines. He finished his initial formation, being ordained a priest on 25 June 2013 at Mother of the Saviour Parish in Sinza, a parish run by the Salvatorians in the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam. His first apostolic service, he did in the same parish where he was ordained, serving as an assistant parish priest. From 2014 to 2017 he was asked to give a hand in initial formation and was appointed Novice Master at Nakapanya. After that period of three years, he went back to the pastoral service in the St. Francis Xavier Parish, Mandera in the Diocese of Morogoro, serving as an assistant parish priest. From 2021 on, he served the Salvatorian Sisters at Migongo Masasi, as their chaplain. Fr. Engelberth had been suffering from diabetes since a considerable time already. He passed away on 12 October 2024 in Dar es Salaam. He was 49 years old and had been a Salvatorian for 19 years.
